Study in Amsterdam


Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and there are more than 800.000 people living in this city. It is a beautiful city with a great dynamic and it’s with reason that it’s called one of the world’s best cities. Amsterdam has a lot to offer: from architecture, nightlife, museums, art, music, clubs, bars, festival to beautiful parks.

Also for students, Amsterdam has a lot to offer and over 100.000 students are enjoying this city. Amsterdam has several institutes and universities that offer dozens of HBO and WO programs. The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”.

There are two universities located in Amsterdam: Vrije Universiteit (VU) and Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). Together they have over 60.000 students.

The Vrije Universiteit (VU) offers 50 bachelor programs and almost 100 master programs, which are divided over 9 faculties: Dentistry; Behavioural and Movement Sciences; Humanities; Law; Medicine; School of Business and Economics; Science; Social Sciences; and Theology.

The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) has an international academic tradition and is closely connected to the city. It offers over 60 bachelor programs and 240 master programs, including 120 English master programs. The programs are divided over 7 faculties: Economics and Business; Dentistry; Humanities; Law; Medicine; Science; and Social and Behavioural Sciences.

There are several HBO Institutes available in Amsterdam:

  • The Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) has divided its educational range over 12 interest areas: Construction and Infrastructure; Design and Creation; Economics and Management; Health; ICT; Logistics, Air and Sea Shipping; Media and Communication; People and Society; Education and Upbringing; Law and Management; Sports and Nutrition; and Engineering.
  • Hogeschool Tio Amsterdam offers HBO programs in hotel management, event management, tourism, e-commerce and business.
  • Intercollege Business School is a private educational institute where you can study for a Bachelor’s degree of Business Administration.
  • Gerrit Rietveld Academie is an international university of applied sciences for Fine Arts and Design, they offer a bachelor’s degree and four master programs. The bachelor’s program contains a general first year and a specialisation of three years: Inter-Architecture, designLAB, Fashion, Graphic Design, Jewellery, TXT (Textile), Ceramics, Fine Arts, The Large Glass, Image and Language, Photography or VAV – moving image.
  • The Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the Netherlands Film Academy, the Academy of Theatre and Dance, the Reinwardt Academy, the Academy of Architecture and the Breitner Academy together form the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK).
  • Academie Verloskunde offers a full time HBO program in obstetric care. The program is characterized by small scale student numbers and high quality education.
  • Hogeschool Inholland Amsterdam offers the programs health, sport, wellness, life science, pedagogy, social work and oral care.
  • At Hogeschool IPABO Amsterdam you can study to become a teacher of primary education.
  • The New School offers a four-year HBO program in the field of communication, creativity and enterprise.
  • Lucia Marthas Institute for Performing Arts (LMIPA) offers bachelor programs on dance, acting and singing.
  • Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) is all about fashion and students can choose to specialise in Fashion & Design, Fashion & Management or Fashion & Branding. AMFI offers all its programmes in Dutch as well as in English.

Academie Artemis is a university of applied sciences for styling and design, geared towards interior design, fashion, media, food and retail. They offer a full-time Bachelor course on Allround Styling, as well as six part-time courses.
