Study in Eindhoven


Eindhoven is located in the burgundy south of the Netherlands, it is the fifth biggest city of the country with around 225.000 inhabitants. The company Philips was founded in this city, which contributed a lot to its industrial boom. It is a vibrant city with a constant flow of new developments in the fields of creativity, innovation, technology, design and knowledge. But that is not all, it is also a city where you can enjoy life in one of its many bars, restaurants and cultural events.

The city is worldwide known for its industrial design and innovation skills, something that can be attributed to the university (University of Technology Eindhoven) and several HBO institutes that are located in Eindhoven. The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”.

The University of Technology Eindhoven, in Dutch called the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TUE), is highly positioned in national and international rankings. They offer top quality education and internationally prominent research. It is a smaller university with around 10.000 students, including 30% international students. They offer 19 three-year Bachelor programs (BSc), 25 two-year Master programs  (MSc) and 11 two-year designer programs (PDEng). It is a research university, specialized in technology and engineering science. The TUE has the following faculties: Biomedical Engineering; Built Environment; Electrical Engineering; Industrial Design; Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences; Chemical Engineering & Chemistry; Applied Physics; Mechanical engineering; and Mathematics & Computer Science.

Eindhoven has the following HBO institutes:

  • Tio University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Tio Eindhoven) offers programs in the fields of hotel management, event management, tourism, business and marketing. Tio offers small scale education, with around eleven students per lecture. The Tio campus in Eindhoven is located in its city centre.
  • Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) specialises in design, they offer a four-year Bachelor program and a two-year Master program. It has an impressive, international team of tutors at its disposal and the quality of the designers they educate is very high. DAE describes the identity of the academy as conceptual, authentic, creative, flexible, free, passionate and curious.
  • Fontys University of Applied Sciences, in Dutch called Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven, offers a variety of bachelor and master programs taught in English and German. The Eindhoven Campus is formed by a collection of buildings located throughout the city.
