Wageningen University & Research (WUR) has around 10.000 students from over 100 nationalities. The mission of this university is ‘to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life’. The strength of the university lies in the combined efforts of the various fields of natural and social sciences. The university is internationally highly ranked and attracts many international students. The domain of the WUR consists of three related core areas: food and food production; living environment; & health, lifestyle and livelihood. The university has the following faculties: Agrotechnology and Food Sciences; Animal Sciences; Environmental Sciences; Plant Sciences; & Social Sciences.
The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”.
Aeres University of Applied Sciences, in Dutch called Aeres Hogeschool Wageningen, is rooted in the agricultural and educational higher education. Aeres University of Applied Sciences offers Bachelor programmes, a Master programme and a three month course. They have three faculties in the cities: Dronten, Almere and Wageningen. In Wageningen the institute focuses on teachers, trainers and extension specialists in Education and knowledge management. The programs train students in becoming professionals in the transfer of knowledge in the field of agriculture (agribusiness), horticulture (floral design and retail, landscaping and gardening), food technology, animal breeding and keeping.
