Study in Groningen

Groningen a beautiful, smaller city in the north of the Netherlands with around 200.000 inhabitants, including 50.000 students. This makes Groningen the city with the highest student population density of the country and also one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands, as half of its citizens are under the age of 35. This already shows that Groningen really is a student city, offering great facilities for students, such as the nightlife, festivals, study locations and many student associations. The centre of the city is completely closed off to cars, making it a safe and very pleasant area.

Groningen consists of one university (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, RUG) and several HBO institutes. The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”.

The University of Groningen (UG), in Dutch called the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), offers more than 45 bachelor programs (including 20 English-taught programs) and more than 100 English-taught master programs. The university has a rich academic tradition that dates back to 1614. The university has around 27.000 students, including around 5000 international students from over 120 nationalities. The University has a strong international reputation and a top position in the international ranking lists. The RUG has the following faculties: Theology and Religious Studies; Arts; Medical Sciences; Law; Behavioural and Social Sciences; Philosophy; Spatial Sciences; Economics and Business; Science and Engineering.
