Study in Leiden


Leiden is a smaller city with a rich history, beautiful canals, monumental buildings and picturesque neighbourhoods. Leiden is one of the most vibrant student cities of the Netherlands. The city has around 120.000 inhabitants, from which around 12.000 are students. Therefore student life is booming and there is a lot to do, from restaurants to museums to sports to theater to nightlife. Leiden has a great central location, it is located between The Hague and Amsterdam.

Leiden is home to the oldest university of the country, Leiden University, but there is also another university located in this city, the Webster University Leiden. Regarding HBO institutes, the city hosts the Hogeschool Leiden. The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”.

There are several HBO institutes available in Leiden:

  • Leiden University was founded in 1575 and therefore has a rich history. There are almost 27.000 students studying at this university and annually they host more than 3000 international and exchange students each year in its Bachelor and Master programmes and almost 1000 international PhD students. They offer 6 bachelor programs and a wide range of master programs fully taught in English. Leiden University has several locations throughout the city and even locations in The Hague, in this city the programs are focused on public administration, law and international affairs. The university has 7 faculties: Archeology; Governance and Global Affairs; Humanities; Medicine; Law; Science; and Social and Behavioural Sciences.
  • The Webster University Leiden is an international university and has around 350 students that represent more than 50 countries. The Webster University describes itself as follows: Global, Action-Oriented & Academic Excellence. They believe in the development of global citizens, through their internationally focused education. It is the only institute for Higher Education offering American-accredited degrees in the Netherlands. It offers both BA/BS (undergraduate) and MA/MBA (graduate and postgraduate) programs. Webster Leiden’s five schools and colleges include Arts & Sciences, Business & Technology, Communications and Education & Fine Arts. In addition to undergraduate programs on subjects like Business Administration, Psychology and International Relations, students can pursue masters degrees in New Media Production, Cybersecurity and more.
  • Leiden hosts as well the HBO institute Hogeschool Leiden, or in English it is called the University of Applied Sciences Leiden. They offer Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, minors and (postgraduate) courses and do applied research in a variety of domains ranging from healthcare and social work to economics, and from technology to education. They have five faculties: Health; Social Work and Applied Psychology; Education; Management and Business; and Technology.
