Study in Maastricht


Maastricht is located in the southern tip of the Netherlands, between Belgium and Germany. It is even more close to Brussels and Cologne, than to Rotterdam or Amsterdam. This picturesque city is one of the Netherlands’ oldest cities and it was site to many global important events. This all has contributed to the city’s rich history and culture. The city has a large international student community, as it houses some of the most international universities and HBO institutes of the country. The city has over 120.000 inhabitants, about 25% of them are students.

The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”. Maastricht houses the Maastricht University as well as 4 HBO institutes.

Maastricht University, also in Dutch called Universiteit Maastricht (UM), is the Netherlands’ most international university: from the over 16.000 students an impressive 51% come from abroad. The majority of the programmes embrace international themes and are taught either entirely or partly in English. It is the only Dutch university in the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN). Furthermore, the university also stands out for its innovative education model and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. The UM has the following 6 faculties: Arts and Social Sciences; Health, Medicine and Life Sciences; Humanities and Sciences; Law; Psychology and Neuroscience; and the School of Business and Economics.

Maastricht houses the following HBO institutes:

  • Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, in Dutch called Zuyd Hogeschool, has around 13.500 students from which 11% are foreign, mainly from Germany or Belgium. The institute offers 34 bachelor programmes and 13 master programmes, in ten fields of interest: Life sciences; Economics and management; Health care; ICT; Arts; Education and society; Language and communication; Engineering and construction; & Leisure and recreation.
  • Maastricht School of Management (MSM) is one of the oldest and most international business schools in the Netherlands. They provide education and advocacy for ethical management, inspiring leadership, innovative entrepreneurship and effective public policy. Their programs are offered around the world, from Cairo to Lima to Nanjing.
  • Business School Notenboom is a private educational institution that focuses upon Business and Hospitality. They offer bachelor programs in Hospitality and Event Management; Business Administration; International Business Management; Marketing Management; & Commercial Management.
  • Fontys University of Applied Sciences, in Dutch called Fontys Hogeschool, offers a variety of bachelor and master programs taught in English and German. They have a location in Maastricht, however, their international course programmes are only conducted at their campuses located in Eindhoven, Tilburg and Venlo.
