The Dutch education system offers two ways to study a bachelor’s degree: the more practical (applied) science (Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs, HBO) and the academic teaching with a more theoretical approach (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, WO). WO institutes are generally called university, while HBO institutes are generally called “Hogeschool”. In Rotterdam, you can study at the Erasmus university, or you can choose one of the many HBO institutes.

The Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is an internationally oriented research university with a strong social orientation in its education. Furthermore, they are part of a large global network of academic partnerships. It is currently one of the biggest universities of the Netherlands with a student population of 23.000 and a research community of circa 1.400 people. The EUR has 7 faculties: Erasmus Medical Faculty, Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Erasmus School of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Philosophy and Rotterdam School of Management.

There are several HBO institutes available in Rotterdam:

  • Willem de Kooning Academie (WDKA) is an art academy located in the heart of design city Rotterdam. WDKA is very internationally orientated, every year many exchange and foreign students come to study at this academy and all courses are in English.
  • Hogeschool Rotterdam (HR) is an institute of applied sciences with several locations throughout the city, they offer nearly 80 Bachelor and Associate Degree Programs.
  • Hogeschool InHolland Rotterdam offers bachelor programs in Business, Finance and Law; Creative Business; Health, Sport and Welfare; and Education and Innovation.
  • Codarts is a university (hogeschool) of the arts, it is small-scale, international and offers high-quality education in the field of music, dance and circus.
  • Pabo Thomas More is a college that offers part time or full time bachelor programs to become a teacher in primary education.
  • Hogeschool Tio Rotterdam offers programs that are related to hotel management, event management, tourism and business.
  • EuroCollege offers small-scale education focused upon business, hotels, events and tourism.
